The above are common and recognisable addictions that may affect you. However, have you considered others that impact on your life such as:
- SOCIAL MEDIA
- NEGATIVE THOUGHT PATTERNS
All the above can lead to focusing attention on the wrong things, leading to procrastination and lack of productivity. Merely telling yourself to stop does not often have the desired effect. Why is this?
An addiction is a behaviour or habit that does not serve your best interests, although initially it may be pleasurable. Our brains are hard-wired for pleasure and comfort and left to their own devices will naturally gravitate towards these rather than what might appear to be discomfort, or challenge.
The problem arises when our desire for for particular pleasures become all consuming and prevent us from doing more positive things that would actually serve us better. They prevent us from reaching our full potential. You might recognise that feeling when you have wasted an hour waiting for a boring film to get better but could not tear yourself away from, or spending half an hour mindlessly scrolling through social media. Maybe it’s the crashing hangover after yet another ‘great’ night out that leaves you unable to function the next day. On a regular basis, these activities steal your time, ambition, and life as they become firstly ‘normal’, then habitual, and eventually obsessive.
‘That’s an hour of my life I’ll never get back…’
‘I’m never drinking again…’
‘I’ll give up next week….’
‘Just one more…cigarette / drink / coffee / chip…’
WHY CAN’T I JUST STOP ???
The answer to this question can be complex and is different for everyone. Here at Total Body Health we get to the root causes of addiction without judgement and help you work through them so that you can become the best version of yourself and achieve your full potential.
