Anyone who has had Covid can catch Long Covid. Often it is women over 40, but it can also affect men and sadly children, who were in very good health previously. Conventional medicine has been painfully slow to face this growing pandemic within the pandemic. At the very best patients face long wait lists to see medical consultants and, at the very worst, gaslighting and woefully wrong advice. (Unfortunately, just like those suffering from another post-viral illness, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), have faced for decades.)
As more research appears it seems Long Covid could be from a myriad of differing things which have combined to create the perfect storm of inflammation in the body. Firstly, viral RNA (Spike proteins) and/or viral ghosts lodged in the gut mucosa lining causing our immune system to go into overdrive. This in turn promotes an extreme autoimmune reaction in many, causing the body to attack its own tissues, such as the small fibre nerves responsible for the smooth running of our autonomic nervous system, or other organs such as the liver, thyroid, heart and kidneys. Thirdly, there have been several studies showing the presence of micro clots in the blood of Long Covid sufferers’ which has led to widespread vascular damage.
Hypobaric Oxygen Therapy or HBOT treatment involves breathing oxygen under pressure in a specially designed Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber and is scientifically proven to help treat chronic infections, reduce inflammation and aid wound healing, indeed many NHS hospitals have their own Hyperbaric Units.

However, as a general rule, as with any chronic health condition, it is very important to listen to your body. Don’t push yourself, pacing activity with frequent rest periods is key. If you are tired and in pain then rest! As a rule, do half as much as you think you can do in a day and the cut that down some more. When trying new activity, wait at least a couple of days to see how you feel before trying to increase what you do. This will avoid the awful cycle of crashing and recovery that we so many Long Covid suffers stuck in.
Eat the colours of the rainbow every single day: fruit and vegetables offer some of the best anti-inflammatory medicine that nature can offer. Add pre-biotic foods such as onions and garlic into your diet in addition of pro-biotic foods, such as kefir, Sauerkraut and kimchi.
Avoid all alcohol and don’t smoke or vape and try and avoid stress – this will just aggravate your condition. Stay hydrated and drink at least three litres of water a day. If you can, get out into the daylight and into nature to rebalance your body, not only will this help your immune health but also your mental health. If you are too ill to go for a walk, sit out in your garden, especially in the morning.
And finally SLEEP – this is the body’s way to detox and repair. Many with Long Covid find sleep a real challenge. Turn off all TVs and screens at least an hour before bed, try meditation via Apps like Calm, and avoid caffeine and eating big meals in the evening. The aim is to get at least seven hours of proper sleep a night to optimize your body’s ability to rebalance and heal itself.
