If you’re living with a chronic illness, especially an autoimmune condition, you’ve probably heard it all: “It’s stress,” “It’s genetic,” or worse — “It’s all in your head.” But what if your soul has been trying to communicate through your body all along.
Autoimmune diseases affect nearly 1 in 10 people around the world (≈800 M) and represent the third most common category of disease in the U.S., with up to 50 million Americans affected and women making up about 80% of cases.
Among autoimmune conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, type 1 diabetes, lupus, and Sjögren’s are especially prevalent—some affecting 1–2% of the population—and rising steadily, particularly in high-income countries.

What Is Autoimmunity (Medically Speaking)?
Normally, the immune system protects us by identifying and destroying harmful threats. But in autoimmune diseases, this system gets confused and begins to target the body itself.
Autoimmunity is when the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells and tissues as if they were dangerous invaders like viruses or bacteria.
In fact, your body’s defense army suddenly turning its weapons on your own cells.
What Actually Happens?
The immune system produces autoantibodies that attack the body’s own proteins. This leads to inflammation, tissue damage, and chronic symptoms depending on what part of the body is being targeted.
Today, scientists still don’t know exactly why autoimmune diseases develop . Common contributing factors include genetics, environmental triggers like viruses or toxins, hormonal shifts (especially in women) and gut imbalances such as leaky gut.
Autoimmune diseases tend to affect women more than men (about 80% of cases), and are often chronic (long-term) but manageable.
When we talk about what’s manageable, we’re often referring to a range of symptoms — like fatigue, joint pain, inflammation, digestive issues, brain fog, and skin flare-ups — with conventional medicine primarily focused on controlling these symptoms rather than addressing their root causes.
Finding Soul-Level Meaning in Chronic Illnesses
Living with a chronic illness can feel like a detour from the life you imagined. But what if it’s not a detour at all? What if it’s part of your soul’s deeper path — a calling to understand yourself in a new way? Your diagnosis doesn’t define who you are. Through the lens of your birth chart, you might begin to see that your symptoms, struggles, and sensitivities carry symbolic messages — ones that speak not just to your body, but to your spirit.
Medical astrology explores the connection between your body, emotions, and spiritual growth, seeking the deeper roots of illness that lie beneath the surface of physical symptoms.
Of course, medical astrology is not meant to diagnose anything. But more and more people are finding it helpful for uncovering why their body might be struggling — especially when no one else seems to have answers.
The answers are in the birthcharts. Certain parts of your birth chart can give clues about how you deal with chronic illness, especially autoimmune issues. Some planets are connected to your emotions and immune system. When these planets are stressed, long-term emotional strain that affects your body. Other parts of the chart reveal your daily health habits and patterns like overworking or trying to be perfect, which can wear you down over time.
The chart can also hint at hidden illness, emotions you’ve pushed away, and even trauma passed down from your family — which is why it’s often linked to “invisible” health problems. Also, everyone has a “wounded healer” in their chart, showing the emotional pain you carry and the powerful healing inside you.
These parts of the chart don’t tell the future or predict illness, but they help us understand what your body might be trying to say when it feels stressed, ignored or unsupported.

What Autoimmunity Symbolizes in Astrology
Autoimmune diseases are still a medical mystery — no one really knows why the body starts attacking itself. But astrology gives us a different angle: what if this self-attack isn’t random, but part of a deeper story your body is trying to tell? We consider symptoms as messages from the soul or emotional body.
At its core, autoimmunity is the body attacking its own tissues. Spiritually and symbolically, this can reflect inner conflict, emotional suppression, or a sense of betrayal of the self.
“When the body turns on itself, the soul might be screaming to be heard.”
Self-Attack as a Mirror of Emotional Patterns
Many people with chronic illness have been the “strong ones” for too long. They’ve kept the peace, held back tears, or pushed through pain — until the body finally says “enough.”
I’m going to share a few symbolic patterns that can show up in a birth chart. You don’t need to fully understand how astrology works — just know that it gives us a way to connect physical symptoms and energetic patterns when it comes to the immune system.
The Overgiver
“I have to take care of everyone else first.”
This particualar energy is associated with service, perfectionism, and self-sacrifice. If you’ve spent years putting others before yourself, ignoring your own needs, or being your own harshest critic — the body may respond by turning inward in pain.
Chronic fatigue, gut issues, and fibromyalgia often show up in “hyper-responsible” people.
The Repressed Feelings
“I’m fine.” (But really… you’re not.) Here we work with a few planets of the solar system.
- The Moon symbolizes emotions and memory.
- Mars= anger and boundaries.
- Pluto= deep transformation, hidden wounds.
When these planets are under stress in a chart, it can suggest unexpressed rage, grief or trauma. That buried energy doesn’t disappear — it gets stored in the body.
In astrology, suppressed emotion = energetic congestion. That congestion? It can manifest as inflammation, pain and breakdown.
The Emotional Sponge
“I absorb everyone else’s pain.”
Water element is deeply intuitive and sensitive. People with strong water placements could easily struggle to maintain energetic boundaries.
They literally carry other people’s emotions in their bodies — leading to burnout, immune dysfunction and mystery symptoms.
The Inner Split
Sometimes the chart shows a kind of inner tug-of-war — like two parts of you pulling in opposite directions. One part of you wants to be visible, powerful, expressed… and another part is terrified of judgment or rejection.
This push-pull creates tension.
That tension? Over time, it becomes internalized. Result ? Inflammation.

So, is it my fault that I’m sick?
The short answer? Absolutely not.
Medical astrology isn’t here to point fingers or blame anyone. Instead, it’s about gaining a deeper understanding of what’s really going on inside your body and soul. It invites you to stop fighting against your illness and start listening to what your body is trying to tell you.
Living with a chronic illness doesn’t mean you’re weak. In fact, it can be a powerful signal — a nudge to slow down, soften your approach, or finally speak your truth.
Your sickness isn’t your enemy. It might just be your body’s way of helping you find a new path.
You don’t need to “believe” in astrology to be curious about it.
Medical astrology isn’t about fate. It’s about using symbolic tools to understand yourself more deeply. The chart points to a pattern you’ve felt your whole life but couldn’t name. That’s where healing begins.
